Most people who choose the field of human resources as their career also work to obtain certification. Getting a human resources certification in Illinois will be a benefit for several reasons. First, it will ensure your employer that you are able to meet national standards for the human resources profession. This certification will also show that you are serious about your HR career. Many companies will require new hires to work toward this certification at the same time that they are working.
There are two levels for human resources certification in Illinois. A certification called PHR (Professional in Human Resources) is the first level that can be obtained. The senior level of certification is called SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources). In order to achieve HR certification in Illinois at either level, there are requirements that must be met in regards to experience in the human resource field.
PHR requires four years of experience if you do not have a bachelor’s degree. Two years are required with a bachelor’s degree and only one year is needed with a master’s degree.
SPHR certification is similar to PHR in that the higher the degree that is obtained, the faster the certification can be obtained. Seven years of experience are required if you do not have a four-year degree (this includes an associate’s degree), five years are required with a bachelor’s degree and only four years are required with a master’s degree.
